Ingredient spotlight: Arnica Flower

As a natural skincare brand, we’re passionate about the ingredients we hand select to use in our skin care formulas.

Each botanical ingredient must serve a purpose and be proven to be effective—and of course, it has to be safe to be used on and absorbed by our skin. It’s no surprise, then, that when we formulated our MASK Lip Stick, arnica flower was at the top of our ingredient must-have list.

Get to know the skin benefits of arnica flower, where it comes from, and why you’ll find yourself reaching for it, again and again.

Where does arnica flower come from?

Arnica flower is harvested from the Arnica montana plant, a golden flower that upon first glance, looks like a daisy but is actually part of the sunflower family.

Known also as leopard’s bane, wolf’s bane, mountain tobacco or mountain arnica, this flower grows in parts of Siberia and high in the mountains of Europe. The yellow blooms are visible from mid-simmer through fall, and are harvested before their petals fully open to preserve their most intense medicinal properties.

The skin benefits of arnica flower

For hundreds of years, arnica flower has been revered for its anti-inflammatory properties. From sore muscles and bruises to bug bites and acne, arnica flower is applied topically to reduce pain and inflammation, as well as help speed healing for cuts, bruises, and wounds.

Arnica contains an active ingredient known as thymol, which, when applied topically,  is believed to open the blood vessels. This vasodilation is believed to help speed healing, since more increased blood flow means excess fluids and metabolic waste that build up around an injury can be carried away more quickly in blood vessels that are dilated.

Once that fluid and waste from the injury are removed, inflammation recedes, and oxygen and nutrients can make their way to the site of the injury to improve the speed of healing.

How MASK Skincare uses arnica flower

We chose arnica flower as a key ingredient in our MASK Organic Moisturizing Lip Stick because of its natural antiseptic and analgesic properties, and its ability to calm irritation.

Paired with other powerful ingredients like menthol to cool chapped lips to further soothe and deliver antioxidant protection, arnica flower’s powerful medicinal qualities are amplified to help heal delicate lip skin.

MASK Organic Moisturizing Lip Stick isn’t just for lips, though. You can also use it to cool sunburned shoulders or work it into sore calf muscles or bruises. Thanks to the healing power of arnica flower and the relaxing power of plants, you may just soothed and stress-free in no time.
