One of our favorite ingredients, that can be found in our Spotless Mask, is Manuka Honey Extract. Manuka honey is a type of honey that is native to New Zealand. This strain of honey comes from the Leptospermum scoparium flower, commonly known as the Manuka bush. What sets aside Manuka Honey from all other strains of honey is its antibacterial properties.
In addition, Manuka honey also has higher contents of antiviral, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory benefits.
Honey has been used for centuries to heal wounds and other ailments. Due to its high sugar and osmotic content, honey prevents microbial growth, keeping any open wounds clean and free of bacteria and microbes. Honey also helps to support wound healing by keeping the area hydrated and moisturized. Honey is also fantastic for reducing inflammation! This can assist with puffiness, acne, and even skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
Manuka honey is fantastic at controlling acne! We chose to use Manuka honey in our Spotless Mask as it's antibacterial properties help to prevent bacteria caused breakouts. Its anti-inflammatory property reduces inflammation in previous breakouts while preventing inflammation induced acne.
Honey also contains levels of alpha hydroxy acids (AHA's) and enzymes that help to exfoliate the skin by sloughing away dead skin cells, removing dirt and grime, reducing excess oils, and clearing out pores all without damaging the skin's acid mantle.
Honey is a well-known hygroscopic product. This means that honey draws out moisture from the air and environment around it, as well as dehydrating bacteria. Not only does the honey absorb moisture, but helps to retain it. Its natural humectant and emollient components help to lock in moisture and reduce dryness.
Honey is great for inflammatory skin conditions. Honey's anti-inflammatory properties will reduce edema and exudates, improving the natural healing process. It can also help to take away any pain associated with inflammatory conditions as it reduces pressure on nerve endings. Honey is a fantastic, natural and organic way to treat inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, acne, and some rashes.
